8 Years Gran Clásico
Winemaker: Maria José Marchante
Winery: Bodegas Navalon
In keeping with Spanish tradition this Anciano wine is aged in oak barrels for 18 months and exhibits classic fruit, vanilla and spice flavours. Bodegas Navalon is surrounded by the ancient vineyards of DO Valdepeñas in the heart of Spain. The bodega has been the passion of the same local family for several generations.
Dark cherry red in colour. Aromas of rich berry fruit compote combine with a hint of vanilla and sweet spice, from the oak ageing. Medium to full bodied, elegant, smooth and displaying with ripe berry and cacao flavours. A wine that is easy to drink, but with subtlety, character and fresh acidity, making it wonderful with food.
VITICULTURE / VINIFICATION
Tempranillo grapes were hand picked from 30 year-old vines in late August/early September. Valdepeñas means “valley of stones”, the soils are clayey lime with a chalky layer which retains water to refresh the vines. Altitude helps moderate the classic continental climate: cold winters and long hot, dry summers.
Fermentation was at controlled temperatures (below 28º C) in stainless steel tanks. The wine was then matured for at least eighteen months in American and French oak casks with varying toasting levels.
This wine is a perfect match with various small plates of Tapas, grilled meats, beef and game as well as moderately spicy dishes and hard cheeses.
